Do Standing Desks Wobble or Make Noise? What to Check Before You Buy

Wobble and noise are the two complaints we hear most about standing desks, and the two things that most often decide whether a team keeps using them. Both come down to how the desk frame and motors are built, so both can be checked before you buy.

Do Standing Desks Wobble?

Any height-adjustable desk has some movement, because each leg is made of telescoping sections that slide inside each other. The higher the desk goes, the longer the lever, so wobble is most noticeable at standing height. How much you feel depends on the frame.

1. Number of leg stages

Desk legs come in two- or three-stage designs, and three stages give a wider height range from the same frame. Our Klass and AgileMotion+ desks use 3-column legs; QuickStand uses a 2-column leg.

2. Leg size and section

Bigger steel sections resist side-to-side movement better. Klass uses 80 × 50 mm rectangular legs, AgileMotion+ 90 × 60 mm rectangular or 70 mm round legs, and QuickStand 60 × 60 mm legs.

3. Load rating and certification

A desk's load rating is a good proxy for how solidly the frame is built. Klass is rated to 140 kg and AgileMotion+ to 160 kg, and both are AFRDI certified, meaning they have been independently tested for strength, durability and safety. QuickStand is rated to 80 kg and suits lighter-duty use.

4. How you load the desk

Heavy monitor arms clamped to the back edge, or leaning on one corner, will show up more at standing height. Spreading the load and keeping the desk within its rating helps any frame.

Do Standing Desks Make Noise?

Electric desks hum while they move, then are silent once they stop. The noise only lasts as long as the desk is travelling, so two numbers matter: how loud the motors are, and how fast the desk moves.

Klass and AgileMotion+ run at under 40 dB while adjusting, and QuickStand at under 48 dB. Decibels are logarithmic, so a few decibels make a real difference, and in an open-plan office with dozens of desks moving through the day the quieter motors are noticeable.

Speed decides how long the noise lasts. Klass moves at 40 mm per second, AgileMotion+ at 30 mm per second and QuickStand at 25 mm per second, so a typical move from sitting to standing height takes somewhere between about 10 and 15 seconds.

Klass and AgileMotion+ also have anti-collision detection, which stops the desk if it meets an obstruction such as a chair arm or a pedestal while moving.

A Quick Checklist Before You Buy

  • Check the number of leg stages and the leg size, not just the price.
  • Look for a load rating well above what will sit on the desk, and independent certification such as AFRDI.
  • Ask for the noise rating in decibels and the travel speed.
  • Check for anti-collision detection if desks sit near pedestals, returns or other furniture.
  • Compare warranties: a long frame and motor warranty shows confidence in the mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Why do standing desks wobble?

Each leg is made of telescoping sections that slide inside each other, so there is some movement, most noticeable at standing height. Three-stage legs, larger steel sections and a higher load rating all reduce it.

How loud is an electric standing desk?

Electric desks hum only while they move. Klass and AgileMotion+ run at under 40 dB while adjusting and QuickStand at under 48 dB; a typical move from sitting to standing takes about 10 to 15 seconds.

What should I check before buying a standing desk?

Check the number of leg stages and leg size, a load rating well above what will sit on the desk with independent certification such as AFRDI, the noise rating and travel speed, anti-collision detection, and the frame and motor warranty.
